When we started developing our Nespresso-compatible pod range, sustainability was front of mind. And like many brands before us, we looked closely at compostable pods. They sound like the obvious answer — coffee goes in, something "natural" comes out. But the more we dug into it, the more we realised the story is far more complicated than the packaging suggests.
What "Compostable" Actually Means
A pod labelled compostable isn't the same as one that will break down in your garden or your council food waste bin. In most cases, compostable pods are certified for industrial composting only — a process that requires specific temperatures, humidity levels, and controlled conditions found in commercial composting facilities.
The problem? The vast majority of UK households don't have access to industrial composting for this type of material. And even where food waste collections exist, many facilities won't accept compostable packaging because it contaminates other compostable streams or doesn't break down within their processing timeframes.
The "Home Compostable" Grey Area
Some pods claim to be home compostable, but there is currently no widely accepted, independently verified standard that guarantees a pod will fully break down in a typical UK home compost bin within a reasonable timeframe. Conditions vary enormously — temperature, moisture, what else is in the bin — and the evidence that these pods perform as claimed in real-world home environments is, to put it plainly, thin.
Calling something compostable without clarity on where and under what conditions isn't transparency. It's greenwashing with good intentions.
Why We Chose Recyclable
Our pods are made from aluminium, which is one of the most recyclable materials on earth. Unlike compostable claims, the recycling pathway for aluminium is well-established, widely available, and genuinely circular — aluminium can be recycled indefinitely without any loss of quality.
We've partnered with a dedicated pod recycling scheme so that when you're done with a Souter Bros. pod, there's a clear, verified route for it to be collected and recycled properly — not sent to landfill, and not reliant on infrastructure that may not exist near you.
Honest About the Trade-offs
We're not claiming perfection. Aluminium production does have an environmental footprint, and we take that seriously. But we believe a recycling system that actually works is better than a composting claim that often doesn't. Transparency over greenwashing, every time.
